fly fishing guide Dan Jones Crested Butte Colorado backcountry

In Pursuit Of A Life Well Lived

I like to have fun outside and share it with others.

As a Crested Butte fly fishing guide and an ultra-amateur cyclist, skier, paddler, rafter, climber, hiker, camper, and campfire cocktail enthusiast, I have a unique perspective on how an average dude can enjoy the outdoors in an above-average way.

Extraordinary memories are often made when we experience something new, attack an objective differently, or share a moment in nature’s beauty with someone we love.

The Jones Guides project aims to be a trusted resource of knowledge for beginner and veteran fly anglers and mountain adventure seekers of all types.

My goal is to share my experiences by guiding clients on the river and through articles and reports about life’s most genuine experiences.

About the author

Dan and Casey Jones at the Little Colorado River confluence

So this is where I’m supposed to write about myself in the third person. Ha!

My name is Dan Jones, and I reside in Crested Butte, CO, with my wife, Casey, and our three dogs, Burt, Gus, and Cammie.

I graduated from college with an M.S. in Accounting and obtained my CPA license soon after. For seven years, I chased the American-Pyramid-Scheme-Dream of being underpaid and overworked as a traveling auditor throughout the bulk of my mid and late twenties. In my early 30s, I deviated from the corporate agenda to pursue a life of better balance. More time focused on adventure and time outside was the goal.

I moved to Crested Butte in 2021 to follow a lifelong dream of living in the mountains.

In the summer, I am now a Colorado fly fishing guide and, when not on the river, spend my time progressing the Jones Guides project or assisting in my wife’s metalsmithing business, Trail Made Designs.

I am not an extreme athlete nor a full-time adventurer, but I still make time to get outside for micro adventures multiple times a week and macro adventures many times a year.

I have mountain biked the Kokopelli Trail, rafted the Grand Canyon, visited nearly 20 backcountry huts in Colorado, and have dedicated many nights to dial in the perfect tailgate cocktails, to name a few of my recent missions.

Check out our new project, Slackwater, for more information on rafting and fly fishing!
